The show at the Greek Theater last evening was a great opportunity to blend styles, visit songs that otherwise may not have been played, and set a tone of sitting in a living room somewhere having a good time. What fun! For me, the highlight of the show was the acoustic portion with Mr. Mahal and Ms. Joy on guitars. What a master of a variety of styles! What a great maestro of song and the stories that they tell! Taj Mahal we had not had the privilege of seeing perform prior to last evening.
Musically the show was a gumbo of styles and performance; Ms. Joy and Monsieur Mahal have the grace and presence to create and perform something greater than the sum of the parts. A good gumbo always is just that, indeed. Yes. As the years roll by an artist matures and hopefully continues to expand musically. Samara Joy and Taj Mahal demonstrated and played to that ideal.
She always is appreciative and gracious towards her band, her guests, her crew, and the audience. We always feel that we are invited to a show that expresses openness, fun, and courtesy when we attend a show with Samara Joy. She respects her work, those who preceded her, and those yet to come.
I could have sat and listened to them play acoustically for an hour or more. I wish the tour good luck and many great shows such as the one at the Greek Theater last evening.
